Just south of Galle Fort, Dewata Beach is the southwest coast's quiet alternative to Weligama for learning to surf. The sandy bottom, gentle shore break, and small crowd make it a relaxed place to catch your first green wave.
Season: November to April.
Where to stay: Galle itself — the Fort for heritage hotels, or Unawatuna for mid-range beach stays. Both a 10–15 minute drive from Dewata.
Getting there from CMB: Fixed-price taxi from Bandaranaike Airport is £56 and takes around 2 hours. Combine with a Galle Fort tour the next morning.
